I see you lads like a bit of lock on.. i've never played it.. but i'm kind of keen.
I got a pretty basic joystick (logitech Force 3D pro) a year or so ago and also got IL2.
I thought i'd like to branch into a bit of this kind of sim/game. But i just never got around to playing/getting into it. So many flipping patches etc to get online. At the same time i saw LockOn.. but went with IL2 instead.
I saw Lock On in asda yesterday for a £5. Can you lads tempt me.. tease me.. etc.. whats the story with online play. Is it any good?... as a complete newbie would it be fun or a bit of a ball ache?
It's indepth but a good laugh. I'm not a fan of indepth flight sims but this has me hooked and i found it pretty good.
To be honest Commando, Epoch and Exo are the better pilots, i can fly, just about land (if i remember to slow down and put my gear down) and after a couple of weeks of playing i can finally shoot planes out the sky, although land targets are hit and miss.
Well worth getting it though, there's only the one patch and Flaming Cliffs if you want it (kinda handy as we all have it).
So froma noobie point of view, it's good and enjoyable.

MadTommy. LockOn is a great game. The learning curve is steep but not slippery!
You can't just hop into a plane and go blasting things out of the sky that's for sure. And, when Exo's about, you'll be lucky to make it as far as the runway.
But, if you've got a little patience, it's a damn good laugh, and a good occasional break from PR. Fiver? Geddit bought.
PS You'll need to get the Flaming Cliffs patch - which is a download costing a mere £7ish.

We had an intense game the over day with baseraping soviet AI's that were a biatch!
As Epoch says - bloody good laugh - mainly at watching each other get shot down!
Very pretty 2 for its age.
I must admit, a little Lock on keeps you sharp for PR if you know what I mean!

I am going to try and get this too, sounds like fun. I played FS2004 ages ago before I got a joystick. A joystick makes a lot of difference!

U will need the downloadable add on product 'flaming cliffs' from
http://lockon.co.uk/
You will then need the the 1.2b patch (download english version)
Once you install these you have to activate the product on line - can be tricky but easy when u know how!
Also download & install hyper lobby here

This makes it much easier to start on line games (a sort of 'all seeing eye' for flight sims).
Oh, and make sure you have these ports open on your computer/router:

Ok i've got this Flaming Farts 1.1b.. and if i'm not mistaken this has all the patches i need to get up to speed. I think it incorporates the 1.2b patch you referred to.
I'll sort out hyper lobby, but 1st i reckon some training might be in order!

Yeah the Saitek is a great stick. Worth having.
For LockOn I use the X52 Pro, but at around £90 it's probably out of your price range.
For BF2 I use a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, which has never let me down yet. The X52 takes up too much room when in BF2.
With the added interest from others, I'll try to set up a 'dedicated' server on my other ADSL line, so the we can keep our pings low. I'll be back online and gaming on Thursday night.
Oh, and DO NOT install Flaming Cliffs from the LockOn Gold CDs. It will almost certainly IRREVERSIBLY break your CD/DVD drive due to the fucked up Starforce protection system. Just install Lockon, and pay the £7 to download Flaming Cliffs online.

Which 1.12b patch you download depends on which Flaming Cliffs you installed.
I downloaded Flaming Cliffs (rather than use the CD from the LockOn Gold package) so I had to install the LO_Flaming_Cliffs_Patch_1.12b_EngWEB.exe patch.
If you installed FC from LockOn Gold, then you need the patch for UK, Germany and France (not the web downloaded one).
And if you have the US CD version, there's a different patch for that! Simple!!

Help... I cant get past the Registration process... arrggh...
I have a serial number from the Flaming Cliffs download... and thats it...nothing on my LockOn case etc..
I have a ShortCut called Lock On 1.12 which takes me to a Activation app.. which asks for my Serial.. so i'm using my Flaming Cliffs download serial as thats all i have.
I select Automatic.. but it fails...
Failure Reason: Unexpected responce Client.Responce.UnableParse recieved.
Download the latest update for your product and try again.
But i believe i have the latest.... arrgghh (i wish i hadn't given up the smoke for new year!)
And if i go Manually to the web site it wants my Hardware Activation code.. or something... :(

right go tot he website and do it manually, make a note of hte long number then thats your activation number then do the shortcut on your desktop
Oh... i'm a muppet... sorted it out... the hardware code and serial look the same... but they wernt.. I'm on.. Doh!

Not often i play a game while taking notes!!
Anyone got any suggestions for what level of realism/difficulty i should learn at. I've been messing about on the easiest level.. and its a bit 'easy'.

I suggest having limited G effects, but not fully realistic or you'll spend the whole game looking at a black screen (or your wreckage).
Most of the realism effects are for single player anyway, I think. In multiplayer I think it's all even (or it wouldn't be fair).
Looks like I'm gonna have to create some multiplayer missions for 6+ players.

Eject is Ctrl-E E E (ie hold CTRL and press 'E' 3 times). Doesn't always work though - you can't eject if you've been killed in your seat! You can usually tell if you're dead, cos your canopy has gone.
Oh yeah - and remember to close your canopy before take off. I think Exo and Commando have both taken to the skies in a F15 cabriolet. Not advised :p

Now you have to decide if you have the 'right stuff' to be a fighter pilot or a ground pounder!!
I like to mix & match but the F15 has got the edge I think - especially for buzzing epoch in his flying tank!!! :D

I like my A10. It's big and comfy and packs one hell of a punch. And it flies at just the right speed to take in the breathtaking view. Awesome turn rate too.
You fast-jet flyboys - you're all sissys. You use your missiles when the enemy can't even see you. How gay is THAT? :p
another piece of advice re canopy's, don't CTRL+C when flying, gets you shot.
A10's are lovely until some nana in his F15 buzzes you and clips your wing

ROFL - I 'playfully' shot Epoch's hog the other day with my cannons - he didnt realise until his engine started to smoke some time later - made for an interesting landing.........he got it down though!

I was testing buttons on my keyboard.. and my canopy popped off.
Pressing random buttons while flying is clearly hazardous to your health! :p
I'm trying to get a 1/2 decent print out of the important stuff in the manual without using a gallon of ink... any tips?

I think I got that path right.
There's a keyboard layout etc.
Bear in mind the keyboard layout changed from 1.02 to 1.1. I think that folder has the right one. I've got another which I can upload next time I get on for a game.
I printed the keys off on 2 a4 sheets and have it stuck above my monitor, however i don't recommend looking at while flying as the ground suddenly appears quite hard and fast especially on autopilot :eek:
I nearly took out Commando the other week by firing all my missiles off because i forgot which button it was on my stick!
A few questions...
Is it only the A-10 that has the voice over on its training?
As this is a very complex game... should i pick a plane and just practice & train with that alone? Once mastered, if ever, move on to the next?
If so.. what plane do you suggest i try to master first? One that would fit in order to play alone side yourselves?
I had some other questions but they have escaped me for the minute.

Well mate - we played around with the A10 at first - coz it has lots of bombs & things!!
The tutorials have to be done several times over before you start to think ahhhhh.....
We are also looking at the F15 now.
Dunno why we started with the US planes!
I think the voice overs are on all training vids - little tip - CTRL A advances game time if you need to fast forward - SHIFT A restores real time - Very handy when u just want to go over a single subject again.

I installed LOMAC.
I went to the LockOn.co.uk website and purchased, sucessfully, the Flaming Cliffs add-on. I have the receipt, card's been debited.
I then immediately get taken to a Russian language version of the website.
Not speaking a fucking word of russian, I am clearly unable to read what the hell it says, and hit the "English" button at the top-right side of the page.
I'm then taken back to the english page, only I'm left without the option to download my newly purchased add-on. All that I can see, anywhere, is the option to buy it again.
Which, presumably, would take me back to a Russian site and completely unable to comprehend anything again.
Someone PLEASE explain to me how the hell they purchased, downloaded and installed Flaming Cliffs from that site without the use of any Russian?
Emailed them; they updated my user profile.
Just my luck to have the damn thing glitch on me and forget that I'd purchased it, grrr. Thankfully all fixed, all five (!!) files/updates are now downloading.

Lol, I went full hog and downloaded FC, the patch, the movies exe and the seaons pack, and then the activation registry-key saver in case I need to reinstall in future (and I really can't be bothered to go rooting around in there myself to find the required keys to do it manually lol).

yeah we came up with this independantly, great minds and all that ;)...as i refer cat herding to trying to keep just my flippin squad together in PR... always having to click on the map to see the names of squad members running in the oppasite direction the the move marker and SL.. etc.. as being squad leader is often as hard as cat herding... let alone all the blue feckers..
So when is the next mass LockOn get together?? With a little bit of notice i'd be well up for a mass T&T lockon session?
This Thursday?? its the only forseeable evening i might be able to make it? Maybe next week sometime.

Playing on Vet level and man but I'm having to fight for every kill. Not even daring to try a campaign lol.
