Well, in all honesty, I don't know if this post belongs in general posting or here, if mod disagrees with where I'm posting this, just move it! :idiot:.

Thought we would talk a little about what games introduced you to the gaming world! Here's my little story...

IIRC, the first real PC game I ever played was Armored Fist 3. Wow, so many good AND bad memories! I had actually owned the game for about over a year before I figured out that it had multiplayer support. Can you imagine? hahaha. Quite a lot of hackers and admins, well they were rarely online at all. The game itself was quite old when I started playing but it was lots of fun while it lasted.

Now its your turn!

Regards
Michael

My first computer was a Commodore 64. Loved it - great games!

My first multiplayer gaming was back in 1992/93 ... Duke Nukem 3D and Doom. Much fun.

Was not a computer user as a kid... having too much fun playing in the real world and not much money in the family for such things.

But a buddy at collage had a computer.... and he had Tank Wars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank_Wars). We used to play it quite a bit. Game would only run on a 386 or slower..once he got a pentium 1 it become unplayable as the processor was too fast for the game!! So we moved onto Doom & Duke balls of steel. That got the gaming bug in me and i eventually got my own PC.. Medal Of Honor then BF1942 were to follow.

Duke Nukem over null modem cable was great fun. I can't actually recall the titles of the first games I played, but it was of the Bubbles Bubbles sort in the commodore 64 era. Some of my friends and neighbours had a bunch of games and I used to go visit them and just sit behind and watch them play. The first computer i had real access to at home ran outrun, a10 tank killer and the duke nukem 2d games. Amazingly it struggled with doom. Later we got an ibm aptiva with 300 mhz and 128 mb ram or so I think, I borrowed Warcraft 2 from a friend and played it quite a lot, the next year I got Starcraft from my uncle at christmas and that's the game that set me off at online gaming. It was all dialup at that time so I tried to lay low and out of sight as much as I could around the time the phone bills would come. Aaah, old times, old times.

I've got the Doom special edition, with all versions since the original.

To play Duke Nukem we'd probably need to use VMware Player (http://www.vmware.com/products/player/) and a DOS VM, since it won't work in Windows. I can create a DOS VM if needed. Not sure the game works over TCP/IP though. It might only support IPX/SPX .... oh, those were the days...

A minor FAQ:

Q: I have the latest OpenAL32 and DirectX, but EDuke32 keep crashing at startup. Why?

A: Do you have DEP (Data Execution Prevention) disabled? You should.
Go to Windows System Properties --> Advanced --> Performance Options --> Data Execution Prevention --> Turn on DEP for essential Windows Programs and services only.

Q: I'm using SD_Duke mod, but I see white dots/boxes when I shoot the enemies, instead of blood.

A: Hires Texture Quality should be set to max, else you will have such visual problems.
Go to EDuke32 Options --> Video Setup --> More Settings --> Hires Texture Quality (set it to max)

You can also try to enable Anisotropic Filtering (2x-16x) for improved image quality.

A minor tip:

Right click on "Duke.Nukem.3D.Atomic.Edition.High.Resolution.v7.4-MasterFaster.part1.rar", keep pressing right mouse button, and drag and drop it to root C:\ , then choose "Extract Here".
This will solve your problems to unrar it.

Additional Notes:

As I already wrote above, to play a game you have to start it by running it's
corresponding Play...............bat file. I explained it already what are the names
of the games/addons/mods and what are the names of their Play...............bat files
respectively.

Now you would ask: What game can I play? I say: All !!! But you can start with the
"Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition" with SD_Duke mod as this is the original game, that
has the High Resolution Pack, High Quality Music and extra blood/gore effects.

What is the best game/addon/mod ? There isn't. It is a matter of taste! You may like
equally playing "Duke Nukem: Weapon of Mass Destruction" mod and also "Naferia's Reign:
Invasion of the Dark Mistress" mod. It's up to you. Play all of them and/or choose the
one that suites you.

What about the keys? Can you tell me the default keys?
The default keys are:
W --> Forward
S --> Backward
A --> Move left
D --> Move right
Q --> Left kick
E --> Use/open
[ and ] --> Move left/right through inventory
Enter --> Use the specific inventory item
Space --> Jump
Left Ctrl --> Crouch
Left Mouse Button --> Shoot

When you are killed, hit E to restart level. Better use the mouse to look around.

The mods like DukePlus, Nuclear Showdown, "Duke Nukem: Arena", "Duke Nukem: Weapon of
Mass Destruction" and "Naferia's Reign: Invasion of the Dark Mistress" have additional
key configuration for their enhanced features. I suggest you to read their doc/htm/txt
files for help. It is recommended to reconfigure their additional key binds for their
special functions. Also each mod will use its own configuration files, thus conflicts
with other mods will be avoided.

Also, if you encounter visual or gameplay problems while switching through the various
games/mods, you can try to delete their configuration files and/or "texcache" folder.
In some cases you have to configure again their key binds for their special menus and
features.

dunnu, started playing NES before I was 3 years old, so it was probably super mario or something.

been playing ever since, I remember DOS being quite tricky to navigate since it was in English esp since I couldn't even read or write in my own language.
