View Full Version : Nation States - Web Based Political Simulation Game

Hey guys,

I played this 'game' a few years ago with a friend of mine who was and still is obsessed with politics.

The concept is simple; you create a nation and choose your flag, government type, currency, national animal, and national motto, and every day/twice a day or once a week/once every two weeks (depending on your options) you'll recieve an issue that you, as government, need to take a position on (or ignore it, if you choose!).

Ultimately, the decisions you make will shape your nation - the crime rate, political freedoms, economic ability etc.

There isn't much to it than that other than multiple nations can be part of a 'region' (we could all make one together) and from each region a delegate can be nominated to be part of the 'world assembly' of nations...

It's not a game where you build factories and units, and do hostile we-take overs of people's regions (those games (such as starsphere and, back in its day, Planetarion were awesome though and if you know of a free one please do let me know!).

It really is a very simply game, but it's just pretty cool for 2 minutes every day to shape something how you want.

Anyway, links here, and also a link/photograph of my nation, which will practically be some nazi state of ethnic clensing, endless oppression and compulsory military service!

http://www.nationstates.net/

My nation: http://www.nationstates.net/nation=terra_denuo (Earth Again) - I used to have a nation called 'Terra' (Earth), but that's now take, so is Terra Nova (New Earth), so now it's The Empire of Terra Denuo (Earth Again)

And after creation it looks like this (subject to change of course);

You play a citizen, get jobs, buy food vote in elections and fight in wars.
http://outer-reaches.com
Concept is similar to planetarion, can colonize multiple planets and fight wars with others, building and research has queues. Currently down but is free.
http://www.travian.com/
http://evony.com/
Evony and travian is medevial strategy games, main difference is that evony runs continously, has a flash interface and resource gathering is largely based on attacking computer cities while travian has resource gathering in the city as main income. I play evony on server 50. Both games work on microtransactions where you can pay money for certain advantages but you can also play for free.

I also know a bunch of other games but I'm too lazy to list.

Having just broken away after a civil war against their occupiers from the Empire Of Terra Denu. Having secured their freedom through a bloody civil war and blackmailing the Empires leader (Emperor Hesketh the ninth) with pictures of him attending lady boy clubs.
They are determined to have democracy now that the iron fist of Terra Denuo has withdrawn from their homeland and the government is concentrating on creating a small technologically and socially advanced nation unlike their dim but heavily armed neighbours.

The Debate

"Do you know how much of my year's work goes to the government?" demanded angry worker Colin King. "Too much! Government spending has gotten way out of control. It needs big cuts in welfare, health, and education. But leave those subsidies to business alone. We need them to create jobs."
"It's not the AMOUNT of tax, it's where the burden falls," says student activist Roxanne Hanover. "And at the moment, far too much of the burden is falling on the poor. People on high incomes still have more money than people on low incomes. I don't think I need to say anything more than that."
"I don't object to the amount of tax, I object to where it's being spent," says social reformer Johann Fellow. "I'd like to see everyone have a choice as to where their willys go every time they fill out a tax return. Everyone would feel a lot better about opening their wallets if they had a say as to where the money went. I think you'd see a lot more public money going to education and a lot less to business."

Following a long and bloody civil war with the dictatorship of Terra Denuo, the Kingdom of Lord Brition was formed. Maintaining a strong army to protect its freedom, The Kingdom was named in honour of Lord Brition whom single handedly took on an army of the foul and smelly Emperor and defeated them, before going into space. It is said that, upon hearing the news of such a defeat, the dictator's shrieking could be heard all across the land, though this may have been his singing...

The People's Republic of Penguitalia is a massive, economically powerful nation, renowned for its complete lack of prisons. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 1.906 billion hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

Hospitals have requested that they be allowed to pay people for donating blood and other bodily organs, such as kidneys.
The Debate

"We remain critically short of blood plasma and various organs," says Williscoollike One hospital administrator Max Summers. "Especially hearts. A good heart is hard to find. But if we were allowed to pay for donations, we'd get more of them and could save more lives. Plus the donor takes home a few hundred willys in compensation. Unless it's a post-mortem donation, of course. In that case we'd pay the family."
"Great idea," says social commentator Jennifer Thiesen. "Except for one thing. You know who's going to be selling their organs? Poor people! They'll be so desperate for money that they'll sell their own kidneys. Well, a kidney. This is just another way for the rich to buy themselves a better life at the expense of the poor. It must be outlawed."

Calling my countrys money the willy was yet again, so worth it.

The Awesome Republic of Polarbearialia is a huge, environmentally stunning nation, renowned for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 742 million are ruled by a mostly-benevolent dictator, who grants the populace the freedom to live their own lives but watches carefully for anyone to slip up.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Defence, Education, and Healthcare. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Polarbearotopia. The average income tax rate is 68%, and even higher for the wealthy. A large private sector is dominated by the Uranium Mining industry.

All-natural foods are becoming a major fad, Animal Liberationists are regularly jailed, the government is making attempts at curtailing the flood of spam emails with little progress, and children as young as twelve are conscripted into the armed forces. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Polarbearialia's national animal is the polarbear, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the kaching.

Polarbearialia is ranked 9th in the region and 42,258th in the world for Most Devout Nations.

You could do that in Cybernations, it was shit tho cos basically you had to join a large alliance otherwise independant nations would just get raided by a higher power nation and there was bugger all you could do about it.

The Empire of Terra Denuo is a very large, devout nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, cynical population of 103 million are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt, moralistic government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Law & Order, with areas such as Social Welfare and the Environment receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 59%, and even higher for the wealthy. A robust private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, followed by Automobile Manufacturing and Uranium Mining.

A survey of the nation's rivers and children has shown that pesticide levels are at an all-time regional high, scenic mountain valleys are flooded with water as damming projects get underway, all guns must be registered, and postmen have been arrested in job lots for selling junk mail as home insulation. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Terra Denuo's national animal is the eagle, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the credit.

Terra Denuo is ranked 12th in the region and 47,478th in the world for Most Beautiful Environments.
