I promised to post up some details about IL2 when i was on your ROF server last night. Here we go.

Firstly a taster on how it looks

A film made using footage from one of our wars fought using IL2

A video showing a bit about EAF

As promised instructions for the Mod Pack

Step 1 - Obtain Ultrapack 1.7
1) Go to the thread below where you will find multiple mirrors to get the files. I say files because the ultrapack has been split into 5 files - 4 @500mb and 1 @300(ish)mb
http://il2ultrapack.net46.net/index....pic,308.0.html (http://il2ultrapack.net46.net/index.php/topic,308.0.html)

You will then need to get a copy of 7-Zip to extract the files - http://www.7-zip.org/ (http://www.7-zip.org/)

2) If anyone has difficulty downloading and extracting the ultrapack PM me and I can arrange a DVD to be posted.

Step 2 - Base version for ultrapack installation
You will need a vanilla 4.08 to install the ultrapack into. To get a base installation to work with I would suggest one of the options below

1) If like myself you keep a 'Backup' copy of 4.08 then its just a matter of cloning your vanilla 4.08 and renaming it something like 'IL2 Ultrapack' proceed to step 3.

2) If you do not have a vanilla installation available you can use your UI installation or probably any other installation that uses some sort of switcher ie. JSGME - just make a clone of a working installation. Before you install the ultrapack you must first prepare the new cloned and renamed installation to take it back to 4.08. Use the switcher/JSGME that you have in there to deactivate all mods and if you have the option to, activate 4.08. Next you need to delete the following folders 'Mods' and 'Folders' both are found in the root folder. Once that is done launch the game to check it still functions and launches as 4.08. If it works you are now ready to add the ultrapack.

Step 3 - Ultrapack Installation
Again two methods - one for those with the 5 files and one for those who have obtained the single 2.25gb file.

1) 5 File route.
- Install 7-Zip, linked above.
- Place all 5 parts of the downloaded ultrapack into one folder on your hard drive - ie "C:\Ultrapack Zipped"
- 'Right Click' on the first file of the download and select 'extract to' then point it to another folder on your harddrive something like "C:\ultrapack extracted" once it starts it should extract the first zip and automatically move onto the next zip until all 5 zips have been extracted.
- Once complete you need to move all of the extracted files/folders into your ready and waiting base version, overwriting where necesary.
- Run the game just to make sure it will still start.

2) 1 file route - anyone who has managed to obtain the single 2.25gb file
- Double click on the 'UP_1.7_Full' exe and extract it to your ready and waiting base version.
- Run the game just to make sure it will still start.

Step 4 - Mod Activation
This is the final step to make yourself CRT compliant with IL2 war hosts.
- Navigate to your ultrapack installation root folder and find the 'JSGME.exe', start the application
- You will then see a list of 'Available Mods' and another box for 'Activated Mods' you need to activate the following mods and in the order shown below

-4.09Beta
-Full_MOD
-6DOF_TrackIR_2

When you activate the 6DOF mod you will be prompted about overwriting, just press yes.

You should now be running the correct mods to fly in IL2 War - just load the game to check everything works.

USER NOTES:
If you want to change mod states - ie. perhaps remove 6DOF you must first deactivate all mods and then reactivate -4.09Beta and -Full_MOD. You must not just deactivate 6DOF.

If you want to fly in a 4.08 game - ie. Airforce War you need to activate the mod labelled as -4.08_ModsOFF that will revert your game back to a vanilla 4.08 installation.

Whenever you change mods always deactivate all mods first and then add the mods that you want.

Some time back i bought.. IL2 & Pacific Fighters, downloaded about million patches, with great difficulty... and was then told i had the wrong version to play multiplayer with.. and everyone was playing another version.. 1946 or something or other :(

So i never actually played it... maybe 5 minutes single player, I just lost patience trying to sort it out.

Left me in total confusion and i have two disks/games i never played. And i'm still totally confused!

Is the info above referring to the original IL2 game or some later version of it?

This refers to the last version released. IL2 Stumovik 1946

This version incorporates all that went before including your version.

The mod pack i have linked has a lot of new content that has added tremendously to this game.

In September my squadron will be starting another Scorched Earth War campaign and hopefully we will fly against an italien squadron with Swordfish, Fairey Fulmars, Sea Hurricanes. Whilst they throw SM79's, Ju88's and the like at us and our Convoys.

We just completed a Battle of Britain Campaign, with over 80 players in game, a working radar system with a human vectoring us in.

For an old game it still has a lot to offer.

hmm interesting.... i see 1946 version is £9.99 on steam. Tempting. Therefore i wouldn't have to mess about with tons of patches if Steam would do it all for me. Would you recommend Steam version or boxed version? I'd obviously what to mod it.

One concern i'd have... is considering the age of the game i'd imagine a lot of the online players being real pros and it might not be that newbie friendly. (Could be very frustrating getting 'owned' over and over again)

But i did originally get it cos i really wanted a good WW2 flying game/sim. Hmmm.

Edit:

System Requirements
OS: Windows® XP/2000 (only)

This is from Steam.. and i'm on Win7 ...

Edit2:

Play.com have it for £6.49 free delievery boxed new.

Well, had a quick test, seems fun. With difficult, i.e realistic physics (not that i'd know if it was really realistic) But if you do anything too hastily, climb, bank, use rudder etc they all end in one kind of spin or another. At least in my spitfire. Challenging, so good. (Tried it with almost all 'realistic' settings turned on.)

Over 200 flyable planes

Terrain graphics are very dated, but the models & cockpit look pretty good. So obviously the performance is flawless.

I followed the instructions above for installation, and tweaked my config.ini for max graphics, widescreen etc.

I had trouble with my joystick sensitivity and found the ingame setup difficult.. on digging about i found this site; http://mission4today.com and this app; IL2-JoyControl. Invaluable for me. You need to register to get downloads. Its a app from the DEV, Oleg, help set up curves etc for Hotas axis.

Will have to try Hyperlobby and get my arse really kicked :D

Even with steam you will need to go elsewhere for the patches to Mod the game, the links i gave will give you virtually every mod there is at present.

hyperlobby is the best way to find multiplayer games for IL2, my squad EAF mainly fly mondays and thursdays, leaving fridays for ROF or first person shooters. We usually have games open to none EAF pilots and we are kind on new pilots, we all started at some time.
