Thanks for the use of your TS and RoF server guys, was nice to actually get into the air finally rather than be stuck in spectator view the whole time, didn't manage to actually hit anything other than the ground, but it was fun none the less, even with eye-bleeding jaggies in 1024x768 with everything off.

Found your RoF pliots Nice and friendly too, cheers.

I'll look into the possibility of getting a RoF server up on the Hussars box. I might even ask you for the server settings you use, though Most of our pilots would probably prefer more automatic options set to ON in the engine department.

We have six currently with the game and more wavering on purchase, and it might be nice if we could get the "Hussars 20 minuters" and you guys together for a bit of a scrap.

Browsing through your forums it seems like the T&T community might well consist of the same kind of players as the Hussars, or more precisely the HGG.

We are heavily into race sims at the moment, but FPS, strategy and flight sims are played quite a bit too.

Hey Miggs, thanks for the warm feedback :) It does indeed like your Hussars chaps are of a similar mindset as ourselves, and it's nice to see.

Glad you got some stick-time and stuck with it despite the performance issues - I really am surprised your rig can cope with the game at all lol.

Swing by any time, and yeah - if some more of your guys get the game I'm sure we'd be able to get some folks together for some friendly scraps :)

Cheers Miggs

Catch you on the server soon no doubt. The dedi wasn't the easiest thing to set up so if you need help give us a shout.

Here is what we ended up doing.. you wont need to do it this way if your server has a directX compatible gfx card.

epoch's words.

The server needs a full copy of the game, and it needs it's own license key (unfortunately - though there have been calls for the Devs to give us dedi owners a server-specific key). Ask the DEVs for a key..;)

Here's what I've done to get our dedi working.

Create a RoF forum account for the server, and activate the license key.

Launch RoF on your gaming PC (i.e. not the server), log in with the server account, and create a pilot profile. Close RoF
Install RoF on your dedi.
Edit startup.cfg in your Rise of Flight\data folder. Insert your server's credentials under the 'account' section, and the external IP/port changes (if needed) under the 'network' section.
Edit the dedicated_server.sds file (this is your server config). The settings are all pretty obvious. An important one is 'ExternalIP'. I think you need to set it to 1 only if you're behind a router (i.e. you have a NAT address). If your server's IP is externally facing, then leave at 0.
On your server, after install, run the Rise of Flight\bin_game\release\rof_updater.exe to ensure your server is updated.
Launch Rise of Flight\bin_game\release\DSERVER.EXE
Choose File|Open.
Navigate to the dedicated_server.sds file and choose Open
The server will start up. You should see the server account name in the console, listed as a spectator.
Game on

That's what worked for me anyway, running on my Windows 2003 dedi.

Welcome Miggins, Nice to see you on the forums, hopefully I'll see you in the air soon! Well, I have a habit of binning it on takeoff, but we'll ignore that :)

After another evening of fun I managed to snap this...

http://www.markrb.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/1250383665_orig.jpg

...where you can see the jaggy things pretending to be the rigging on the SE5a. All that's missing is a wave from the pilot....should have shouted "CHEESE" over TS.

Only thing left to try with this current system is a little proggy I got with the motherboard (I think) when this last system was built. Looking at it, it seems I can nudge up almost everything in the box from voltages, clock speeds and fans, either on their own or all together.

There's even a "Turbo" button I can push which makes the apparent speed of the CPU increase, at least the numbers on the display go up a little for CPU and some other bits. Since I don't really want to blow this thing up by inadvisable fiddling I'll probably just try that friendly big green button, but if I'm still crashing on take-off I'll leave the slot free for somebody else who might be able to join in a little more until I'm on the new system.

Thanks once again for the use of your server whilst I try my fiddling around.

Trying the auto-oc is worth a shot, certainly... really does sound like it's just the moment when you aircraft lifts off and your PC struggles with the sudden increase in load of having to work out what the hell's going on lol. Anything that gets you up into the air has gotta be worth trying!

Might help you, Miggins :)

I tried 800x600 resolution the other week, but when the updater launches you can't see the "start" button to kick off the RoF.exe, mind you, I forgot to put desktop to 1024x768 this afternoon when trying the "green button" overclock thingie and I was able to choose the lower res. as the game loaded. the auto overclock gave me between 2 and 4 fps in the "russian roulette" 1v1 mission and I even managed to take out a nieuport and a breguet.

Doesn't sound a lot, but 3 fps is almost 20% for me in a 1v1 dogdight, don't think it will help much in a 5+ plane mission, though the even lower res might.

Will try 800x600 now, might have to wear glasses to stop the eye pain though. If the devs could see what a mess I am making of their lovely graphics they might take back my reg key though.

Erm, wow.

Uh, no, no, more like WOW!

First part of 1v1 mission is choppy as hell, but I think that's because I change desktop resolution to 800x600 too while the game loads to get full screen rather than a little box in the corner (the reason I have not managed 800x600 before was because I was changing desktop before starting game and not being able to see the bottom of the updater window)

How do you guys cope with being able to shoot where you want and not having to add in a 10 frame lead?

Just did the roulette mission again and I was hitting 33FPS in close dogfight (<100m) without the auto OC, without gamebooster, but also without free-track too or I'd still be in there.

I was about ready to give up on MP until the new machine, but that might just be playable, especially if I do the same proceedure as with the 1024x768 res.

Whoop, good news :)

We'll be seeing you in the server for a while yet then? :)

Yeah, SP is great now, and so are smaller co-op missions.

Now for the bad news, more than maybe 5 or 6 a side and I'm back to low fps problems when I get to the fight. Flying around the fringes is fine, steady 20-25, but dive in and I maybe get 5 or 6 then hit the deck.

I can run the fighter interception missions in SP where my machine is doing all the work, bit there seems to be just too much going on in the larger (10+) missions and when I peeped into taskmanager there was 100% CPU usage still.

If we can get a Hussar dedi running I think I might be really selfish and ask the guys if we can limit the missions to the smaller ones, at least until I'm running with the new kit.

We definately need more servers.

Managed to get a number of the guys together tonight and tried to get them up in the air on your server.

Ade managed to crash on take-off, Stelsons game borked out as he got to the cockpit, and Lars couldn't get his engine started.

I passed on your TS details to the Ade and Lars, but Lars got shy (I think he thinks his english is poor) so didn't want to come over. His english is fine BTW, and a damn sight better than my Swedish.

After that first mission take-off debacle by the 20 minuters Ade decided he needed more practice getting into the air before venturing out again, so the four of us spent some time in a private server (though Lars had turned on the auto fuel and auto rad settings so the practise take-offs were not really "training" as such) but the actual combats were silky smooth since we were 4 v 4AI for a couple of missions.

I heard from Topgun about getting a server logon and he wanted to know technical stuff about our box so I'm getting out resident Rackage expert to collate what resources our box has to see if we can run a RoF server ourselves (possibly even two), but I can see now that we will be probably be having more items turned on than you guys run in the engine management department.

I definately saw an improvement in my own flying thanks to the mega-low res tonight, though those bigger missions are still a killer for me.

Thanks for your perseverence with me.

Swapped a few posts with TopGun over the last few days, and there should be an HGG RoF server arriving soon (providing our resident server guru can get things sorted). We even have a couple of guys trying out the mission builder already.

Cheers for the heads-up on who to contact.

We'll probably have to run with the engine management stuff on, but TBH I'm getting used to setting the rad/mix myself now thanks to your server.

Considering getting one of those Saitek thruster quadrants and a new stick to go with the new box when it arrives.

Still can't persuade any other "H20" (other than Stel) to get into the seat of a plane on your server, they say they want to be able to fly first so they don't make a total show of themselves (not something I'm that worried about, as you have probably noticed in my forays to your airspace).

Tell 'em to stop being pansies and they can come join me, upside-down on the airfield wheels gently spinning with their dignity intact absolutely anytime they fancy! :D

:)

Server is up ATM, simply called "hussars" for the present whilst Gonzo works on "control panel intergration" (whatever that is).

We will be stressing the server over the next week or so to see how things go before we settle on how big we can make it whilst retaining stability/playability.

Miggins
20-08-09, 23:02
It works, but Gonz has turned pretty much everything on to start with.

I'll point him over here to you guys if you don't mind so he can pick your brains about server settings.

Masaq

Course, go for it :)

Miggins

Spending most of my flying time on your server rather than our own ATM. I think it's the settings to be fair, I like the extra fiddling needed to keep the engine running until I'm shot down or (sometimes) the mission ends.

The rest of H20 guys are rather brassed off with RoF I think, especially without the pilot aids, so giving the Hussar server a little more realism is not really on the cards. If more "arcade" options don't emerge from the pipeline soon I'm pretty sure I'll be the only Hussar still in the air.

Hussars server is not even getting used as far as I can tell, at least there never seems to be anyone using it whenever I try, and with only co-op available I need another just to kick the missions off.

Hopefully the dogfight server stuff will surface in a while and I'll see about swapping it to just that.

If the other H20's can't be bothered playing RoF any longer I might even be able to set it to a simmilar realism as the T&T server and maybe spread the load between us rather than everyone loading up into one of the few decent servers that's about.

My only worry is that with the mappack3 and 1.6 patch that's just been released for CoD:WW the other top brass might want to claw back resources from the box RoF runs on.

Meanwhile I'll still be searching for my elusive first kill in your server.
