Found someyhing useful in the manual - When placing map markers, check what radio channel you are in (group, global etc ....) as apparently the map markers are only visible to the people in the group you had selected when you placed it.
Also place a marker but dont confirm it, then use the up/down arrow keys to change marker type and shift+up/down to change the colour.
