I have created this thread to assist newbies (and non-weaponphiles) in choosing appropriate weapons and kit for their missions within ArmA A.C.E.

A Word About Calibres
A very important element in A.C.E mod is ballistics - By this I mean physical 'projectile' dimensions I.E size, weight, shape and speed.
There are 2 main sizes or calibres of round when talking about western rifles; these are 7.62 x 51mm NATO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7.62x51mm_NATO) and 5.56 x 45mm NATO (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5.56_mm_x_45). The current main infantry service rifles of the UK & US (L85 & M4/M16) are chambered in 5.56 whereas the older rifles (L1A1 SLR & M14) are in the larger 7.62.
The physical differences between these 2 rounds are size, weight and power, I could quite easily dedicate an entire thread describing the comparison between the 2 rounds but that would be too time consuming, instead here is a data chart comparing the 2.
Cartridge 5.56mm
Cartridge size 5.56x45mm
Bullet weight 3.95–5.18 g
Velocity 772–930 m/s (2526–3051 ft/s)
Energy 1,177–1,708 J
Cartridge 7.62mm
Cartridge size 7.62x51mm
Bullet weight 9.33 g
Velocity 838 m/s (2749 ft/s)
Energy 3,275 JConsideration should be given to this factor when choosing what main weapon to take as it ultimately determines range, recoil, weight and stopping power. When selecting a weapon, pay particular notice to the data associated with that weapon within the info window as it will tell you calibre and max range (for point and area fire)
*An important note here is most 7.62x51mm rifles can use M118LR rounds, these are 'match grade' and have a heaver bullet that is better suited to long range sniping.
Youtube Here is a youtube video explaining the difference between a 5.56 x 45 & 7.62 x 39 (AK-47 Round)
youtube Here Is a youtube video of a series of ballistic penetration tests conducted by the US Military
=====EQUIPMENT=====
NV Goggles - Work by amplifying infa-red light which is not visible to the naked eye, this means anything that emits IR light can clearly be visible through these (IR strobes & IR flares etc) The player has the ability to either adjust the 'gain' manually or automatically - this ensures the unit is not too bright or dim.
