View Full Version : Next time you have your PC case open...
If you want to experience the thrills of gyroscope ownership in your own home, the next time you open your PC case, pick up your hard drive whilst it's spun up and gently move it from side to side.
You'll get a weird sense of resistance in one direction and a tugging, pulling motion if you move it the other.
I've had the side of my case open for the past few days whilst I sort out my file archives from various HDDs onto my new main drive - I've just had all the SATA and power leads hanging out the side and my drives sat on the desk. I picked up a few to make space this morning - it's a weird sensation!
Or get a PowerBall (http://www.powerballs.com/).
Psh, why spend money when every one of us has a HDD? :p
im intrigued tell me more!!!!
is it like doing acid or smack?
I've got a IDE/SATA to USB adaptor cable that lets you plug in HDD's to usb - Experienced this many a time.
Slightly better tho is I keep a few large bearings in my locker at work and when I get very bored I spin them up with an airline - Cant tell exactally what speed they are reaching but the sound it makes as it spools up is like a jet engine - This causes the same gyroscopic effect but about 10 fold, to the point where you physically cannot change the orientation of the bearing easly.
Anyway the best part is when you release it on the floor - the bearing, now spinning probably in excess of 10k RPM starts to grip the floor and accelerate rapidly across my workshop followed by a trail of sparks.
Have experienced with various techniques to improve grip of said bearing including rubber 'launch mats' but it gets to the point where the bearing is going too fast that if it did hit anyone it would likley break their shin.
This vid is not mine but gives you the idea of what I mean (alot slower tho)
