On dads laptop right now...
Reformatted my System partition this morn after an annoying "vanishing taskbar" virus, traditionally cant get on the internet due to lack of drivers for the LAN card and "ethernet" and loads of the usual fresh install crap
Havn't bothered trying to fix any of this yet because of my main problem. I'm locked out of my "My documents" partition (E:) ccontaining all my music photos etc etc.
The drive is written in blue as opposed to the usual black in My computer and when I click on it it says "Cannot open My documents E: Access Denied" I havn't tried fixing anything else yet cos I dont know whether I need to shoot myself yet if I cant fix this
HALP!!!!
Did you 'compress' this drive..the one showing up in blue. As if i recall correctly.. blue type is a compressed drive.
What was the virus called?
What does 'Computer Management' - 'Disk Management' say about this drive.. i.e File type, health, type etc etc??

no management button (dont think you get it on Home)
Drive is compressed I believFile system is NTFS
Odd thing here is that "My Documents" is the ONLY folder inaccessable on the drive All others are easily opened
Ran Chkdsk on the drive all is good
Perhaps this could work...
Take the corrupt drive out of your machine and place it in another machine as a slave.
Transfer your data to the other machine and backup to DVD or USB drive.
Put the drive back in your machine, reformat and reinstall windows.
Do a virus scan of the backup data and then transfer your data back to the newly born virus free OS.
Could this solve your problem ???

All versions of windows have Computer Management - Disk Manager... you may just have to enable the option to see it.
Right click on your Task Bar > Customise > Show 'Administrative Tools'
Or something similar to that....depending on what OS you are on.
What message do you get when you try and access this drive?
Your My Docs is most likely protected by NTFS permissions relating to the logon you used on your broken PC.
My suggestion would be to 'Take Ownership' of the My Docs folder, thereby giving you permissions to reset/change NTFS permissions so you can access the data.
I don't know how compression affects this though - I've never used folder compression.
Cain... the problem will be the Security Setting set on those folders.. can you alter the Security Settings / Folder Persissions.. as thats where your problem lies..

Sounds very much like my problem *Access denied*
Plus my documents shows up as Blue meaning compressed or encrypted, rest of the drive is fine
How do I take ownership of this thing? it is the exact my docs from the old pc so I think this may be the problem
tried setting "My documents" in the current setup to the one in D: just says "D: is not acceessable: Access Denied"
Cant imagine what setting I need to change, I'm allowed into everything system wise and hidden etc etc
Can the PC containing that drive get on the internet? If so, we (or someone else willing to help) could Webex/LogMeIn onto your PC and take a look.
Cain i remember i had the same problem if i remember rightly (this was about 4 years ago) i had to change Simple File Sharing
open up any folder "My Computer" for example click Tools>Folder Options>Veiw Then scroll right to the bottom and untick Use Simple File Sharing
see if it works if not try messing with the sharing a security settings of the drive try to take Ownership

why not just let epoch or someone remotely connect as suggested? He normally charges £££ for that.... :)
Yeah, to "connect" with Epoch for a few hours can set you back about £250, I've heard ;) :p

And who TF said you could market "Tricked Out" siggys and avvys"? BTW, nice avvy and sig. I feel the need for my stomach pump after Marc's unfortunate incident in '84 regarding the pinty glass and daring his buds to fill it with whatever came to hand...
