View Full Version : Upgrading
Thinking of going the AMD 64 road with upgrades.
Which socket set is best (no jokes lol) either 754, 939 or???
Would i need to upgrade my graphics card and ram?
What board manufacturer would anyone recommend? MSI, Abit, Asus???
And hell no i don't want to go the Intel route coz they suck the big elephants cheesey dick

You really hate me dont ya :P
If i hated you, you'd know it, trust me.
Being on the amount of painkillers i am at the moment, and having Delyth scream constantly, and i mean all the goddam time, isn't do much for my personality. Short temper, short fuse, even shorter than usual.
I just want to upgrade my system and on ebay i can do it at a fraction of the cost, so i was asking for advice, not grief. I work hard for a living, well when i'm there, and want to spend a bit fo cash is all. Just because you're system isn't what you want, thats no reason to accuse me of whining, which i wasn't.
End of discussion

Yeah i know ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
Not me unless i have my rant lol *hugs*
Aye rob. for £26 thats 37.1022 EUR it's dirt cheap. Doesn't come with drivers or cd or any cables, but you don't need cables anyway and postage is £6 so it wees all over buying it froma shop all boxed and stuff. Also comes with warranty. Probably off the back of a lorry but who cares. For that price i'd gladly try an ATI :D
i r now got
msi K7N2 Delta2 nforce chipset
XP athlon 3200+ 400gsb2.2ghz
1gb ddram pc2700
nvidia geforce 5900XT
i r now happy cos i can at last play doom 3 and farcry on ultra :)
Well i ain't going to buy that SE ATI as that was what it was and mine pisses all over it.
Now to think about my g-card. should i bother with a fx5600 256meg? or stick with my 128meg FX5600.

See if you can ebay a Radeon 9800 Pro of some description
Pi55es all over the FX cards up to and including the 5800Ultra
5900 and 5950 will beat it at stock speeds, but spend another 20 quid on an artic cooler and it will go up to XT speeds reasonably easily.
My m8 just got one off ebay for £75
basically in that generation (Nvidia FX / ATI 9x00) the ATI are the more powerful cards - Hence I had the 9800XT myself.
If I was choosing now though, it would be the 6800 Ultra all the way tbh
And incidentally, the 9600 256 that you described would eat the FX5600 alive.
For the record, I am an Nvidia fan and don't particularly like ATI - but bang for buck in that generation of cards, ATI (unfortunately) won.

I'd second the motion of going for a 9800Pro. It's not that much slower than an XT, and costs a lot less especially if you go for the 128MB version. It's what I've got now in fact.
A thing to note with more memory in general (video or system) is that more if it is only any good if it's used. If a games framebuffers, textures and geometry fit into the 128MB of the video card, you'll see no difference with the 256MB version.
I'd go with a faster card with less memory than a slower card with more. 9800Pro 128 instead of a 5600 256, or indeed instead of any 9600 256.
Don't get me wrong, 256MB will probably help with newer games such as D3 and FarCry on newer cards, but I don't think I'd like to play either with a 5600, 256MB or no. Of course the new generation of cards are more than just a small step up in performance for those games...
There's a nice round up of video card chips and their clockings and pipes at THG (http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/vga_charts-02.html).
In the same article, is a massive D3 performace comparison at THG (http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/vga_charts-07.html). Tests run with i875 chipset, P4 3.2 GHz CPU and 1GB. And here's FarCry 1.1 (http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/vga_charts-08.html). GeForceFX 5600 is the normal 128MB while I'm presuming GeForceFX 5600 U is the Ultra version with 256MB. Also not the relative preformance of the Radeon 9800 Pro normal and 256. I'm referring to the no AA/AF 1024x768 results BTW (or 8 AF in D3).
As for sockets, Socket 939 is supposed to offer the better upgrade path. According to Anandtech (http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2242) the new 90nm processors are all 939.
I'm sticking to my Batrton 2500@3200 400FSB 1GB Corsair XL Pro for the moment.

What's up with not being able to edit posts? : \
Anyway, I'll just add that I'd personally just upgrade to a good video card, if you're current CPU is half decent. High end Barton is still ok. If you were to sink all your money into a 6800 GT, even a 128MB, it would be better than getting a 9600, and a 3500+ 130nm AMD64 (the cheapest 939 CPU at the time of writing) and a 939 motherboard.
The 90nm AMD64s will come in a range of 3000+, 3200+, and 3500+, making the 939 platform more within reach of all! When they'll be available is another thing. They're not on Dabs (http://www.dabs.com/uk) yet.

The new 90nm 939s appear to be at Scan (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Products.asp?CatID=11&Category=CPU&ThumbNails=Yes&FilterCategories=320&FilterMinPrice=&FilterMaxPrice=&FilterKeywords=) though. It's those Winchester 90nm I'm referring to.
