View Full Version : [Not resolved] - Help Needed With FRAPS
Ok the problem I am having is recording sound ingame whilst using FRAPS
This is my default setup:-
http://www.dtgrimmer.plus.com/1.JPG
When set to this, TS and ingame VOIP works great
In FRAPS you have 2 sound recording options - 'Detect best sound input' and 'Use windows input'
Detect best sound input - This will only record TS chatter
Use windows input - This will record my mic constantly.
If I enable 'What You Hear' in my windows recording devices I can set FRAPS to record literally what I hear and all works fine ingame, this however will dissable my mic as I cant directly use it as an input method.
My 'WYH' is then my default record method for TS/VOIP and providing I give my mic a small bit of level I can hear it ingame but this then creates the problem that too much mic level creates feedback / too little and I cant be heard, also VOIP picks up my game sounds too which is not preferable.
Anyone know how to fix this?
mate.. i've got Vista all soted now.. i also have x-fi and full version of fraps.
Not used it in Vista yet.. but i'll test it, get it working, i hope, and report back.
Yeah had problems... for some reason you(I) cant select any options or varients for sound in Fraps, (like i could in XP)... its shite.. i'll do a little rooting about at some point.
Right, try this: it works for me, at least.
Set FRAPS to "Let Windows Decide" - it should show as using DirectSound to record sound.
In Options, set TS to use "Wave" instead of DirectSound. Make sure you specify your Microphone as the Input Device, your speakers as Output.
In the Windows Mixer make sure you have your speakers as the default output, Microphone as default input. Leave "What you hear" as unavailable/disabled.
You should now haveTeamspeak and FRAPS recording and playing through different routes - TS comes via Wave, FRAPS uses DirectSound.
BF/PR will be using DirectSound also, so FRAPS should record VOIP and ingame sounds but NOT interferre with recording through TS.
Last time I checked - month or so ago - this setup was working fine for me.
no.. was gonna respond with details but didn't have time.
It's a wee bit complicated.. I was gonna test some options. But i was getting NO sound in ArmA with this method.
Some settings were not quite as you stated here. I'll post all when i'm on my desktop with 5 minutes :)
Hrmm, might be a difference between 32 and 64 bit versions then - I literally took settings directly from the programs open in front of me. (Although I just noticed FRAPS says Direct Stream rather than Direct Sound lol).
With FRAPS set to 'Detect Best Sound Input' / 'Vista Direct Stream' I get no sound recorded in ArmA or BF2.
Best way I can think of doing what I want it to do is buy a cheap dictaphone and link it to my speakers
Shit, just re-tested and now I get no sound in ArmA/BF2. Balls. Googling for answers...
FRAPS has a new release, 2.9.6 (I was using 2.9.4) which has added DX10 support... might be worth trying, downloading now.
Triple post, whee!
Well, this works for me at least:
FRAPS 2.9.6.
"Use Windows" -> 'What U Hear' set as the recording device in FRAPS.
Both Wave and DirectSound in Teamspeak seem to work (at least in local test mode), with Microphone specified as the recording device rather than "Default/What U Hear" and the speakers set as output device.
Then in Windows, What U Hear is set as the default recording device. Might cause problems for other application (like BF2 ingame VOIP, I need to double-check that), but it allows sound recording in FRAPs at least...
Edit:
GAH. Setting recording device to What U Hear makes BF2 VOIP at least unable to pick up the Mic... ffs this is ridiculous.
Edit2:
I was seriously considering enabling my onboard soundcard and using that for recording voice over... except of course if BF2 is using the x-Fi it'll need the Mic plugged in there. Meh.
Are you using a trail version?
I'm using a full version of 2.9.4.. with problems... gonna look now.. 'in the shops' (ahem) for 2.9.6
Nah, I suckered up and paid for it a year or so back when I was taking ingame footage for the PR team.
I'll happily pay for it.. if it works!!... otherwise i'll stick with 2.9.6
You buy a one-off license that grants the right to upgrades for life, IIRC. At least, by logging into the site I was able to switch from .4 to .6 without any problems.
I think it's the way Vista handles sound management, which *is* a step back from XP, IMO.
Yeah.. you get free upgrades..
Have you got it working??
As i'm not gonna buy it if it doesn't work!
you get free ringdings as well..................
Nope, still not got it sorted Tommy - I'd leave it for now.
Mine seems to work perfectly, and I donīt remember changing anything so I will check what the settings are when I get home and post them.
Arrrggghhh i just tried about 5,000,000 combinations untill i was soo confussed.. couldn't get it working right! :disgust:  :mood: :argue:
Tommy - I've literally tried everything, gona go with the cheap dictaphone idea
Think I might have a fix. I'll need to test it today.
I've set Windows to use What U Hear as the default recording device.
I've set FRAPS to record using What U Hear.
I then installed the latest version of the Creative Console Launcher, downloadable from the Creative website. This, cruically, allows you to set the x-Fi's mix settings directly. Here, I've adjusted the microphone level and set it as the default soundcard recording device.
Download is here: http://support.creative.com/downloads/download.aspx?nDownloadId=10662
Information on it is here: http://support.creative.com/downloads/welcome.aspx?nDriverType=3#type_3
In theory, games etc should use the x-Fi's setting, and record from the soundcard. I just double-checked with the BF VOIP Setup utility, and the microphone is definitely working even though What U Hear is set in Windows.
Looks like this should allow games to record via the Microphone for VOIP, and Windows to record via the "What U Hear" system, for FRAPS.
Will test in ArmA now, and post results.
ArmA sound recorded, and double-checked with TS.
It works fine.
Think I've already tried that, I had it setup so that windows recording device is 'What you hear', then in creatives control panel give microphone 'playback' some level - any input in the mic is then replayed back through speakers albeit quieter (depending on how much level you give it.
If TS is set to use 'microphone' as recording device it will change Vistas setting when it loads, therefore making FRAPS record mic input not WYH.
If TS is set to use 'WYH' FRAPS will record ingame sound but TS/VOIP gets screwed up as it'll record from WYH which is mic+game sounds - for me a long transmit on TS results in horrible feedback.
Thats how it works for me atleast.
IMO vista needs to recognise both mic & WYH as input methods and not treat them as 'either/or' ... that way BF2 & TS use Mic and FRAPS uses WYH.
Masaq.. this works until you use TS.. then it all goes tits up.
What TS settings are you using?
As when Windows is set to 'WYH', TS also has to be set to the same.. otherwise i either get a message saying device is in use or i can unmute my mic.
Basicially this works as long as you dont use TS. :(
