View Full Version : Ok I'm confussed.. what should i get - New PC
Ok i've killed my old mobo, so i looking at a complete new rig.
But i'm really confussed.. i've looked at the other threads, but they never seem to come to a conclusion.
I want to spend as little as possible, but still be able to play all games at high setting and run smooth.
Katash/Alex what did you two end up with?
I'm thinking, Intel Dual Core, decent PSU, no idea about GFX card, no idea about mobo chip set,

DFI LanParty DKX38-T2R, iX38 Express, S 775, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), DDR2 667/800, SATA II, SATA RAID, ATX £105.74
This list was somewhat governed by what was available in stock.. i need it now.. not in a few days.
CAN ANYONE JUST TELL ME WHAT TO BUY :D
My new setup is as follows :-
Coolermaster CM 690 - Fantastic case, best I've ever worked with, and suited to new range of 'long' gfx cards.
Coolermaster 620W Modular PSU - Literally 'silent' thought it was broken at first til the PC booted.
Asus M3N-HT Deluxe Heatpipe ed - Fantastic mboard with passive heatpipe cooling that attaches to your memory too - plus it has 'express gate' - a cool feature whereby it can boot a cut down linux OS in about 5 seconds so you can surf/chat/transfer files without actually booting into Windows.
OCZ Reaper 1066 DDR2 Mem - Nice mem with heavy heatsinks and heatpipes, running in dual channel (or ganged mode as its reffered to as) recognised by moboard as 'SLI ready' although I believe this is just sales jargon.
AMD Phenom 9950 Black Edition - 2.6GhZ/quad - great chip, most ppl say go intel but I've always been a fan of AMD and I don't regret getting this one.
WD 10000RPM Velociraptor 300Gb - Incredibly fast HDD but pricey, well worth it tho.
Creative X-Fi Extreme Gamer - 5.1/7.1/optical out etc ....
Pioneer DVR-112Bk - Good dual layer DVD-RW and very cheap.
EVGA 260GTX Superclocked - Great card, slightly faster than standard 260's but slower than 260 "core 216's" - perfectly adequate for me although I can turn on the m/board onboard VGA and run hybrid SLI - not yet needed to.
Zalman ZM-MFC2 - Nice fan controller with 4 outputs, 4 temp probes, LCD display etc ...
2 x Generic 120mm fans - not really needed but the case has provision for 8 fans and got 2 for £5Only problem I had was m/board had an older BIOS that didnt support 9850's / 9950's - had to send back to vendor to reflash for me.
Not yet done any benchmarks, dont intend to overclock - plays Crysis on High / 1440x900 / 4aa with FPS not less than 25
PR on max settings 8xaa with lowest FPS on Korengal of about 60 IIRC / highest on some maps of 250ish
CoH on DX10 / max settings lowest about 30fps IIRC
Got Vista Ultimate x64 but that was FOC, ask me and I'll explain how.
total cost was just over £1000

GET THAT CARD!!!!!!!
lol on a more serious note, if you can afford it, I'd go for the 280... More than just a GPU it will bump up the power of your whole rig and beef up your CPU at the same time

lol Cain.. both too expensive.
I was hoping to get a good vid card more in the £100 - £200 price range. As there seem to be plenty in that range with lots of power. But i still need to have a good look.
I can always upgrade in 12 months if needed. As long as my mobo structure is up to date.

I ended up with just buying the hd4870 512MB graphichs card, and it really did miracles. My cpu is crap only an old celeron 1.6 but i can still run all settings on med, and some on high. on some maps i have run everything on high with no problems. Will properbly buy myself a new motherboard and cpu within next couple of weeks tough, and after whats been said here, it looks like im goin for intel instead of amd. so properbly E8400 or 8600 depending on how much money i get:)
I can really recomend the 4870 for u tommy, i was really confused on what to buy myself, havnt been into computers for many years. And i tought i had to upgrade my whole system for a fairly new graphics card like that, but only needed a new power supply and 10min of swearing and cursing trying to fit an oversized gfx card into my small HP tower. I was also considering the 280 as cain said, but i found it a little out of my price range if i were to update my cpu also.

intel celeron + 4870? ? ? = = :S
What???
Slow old chip with a fast new graphics card... i'd assume the CPU is a major bottleneck.
I think that's what he means :D

i know:) cpu is MAJOR bottleneck, hence im gettin a new cpu in couple a weeks.just couldnt afford everything when i bought the gfx;) But still, with crap cpu, pr run 100% smoothly when all is on medium. cant wait to get new cpu tough.

Looks OK Tommy .. Better than your last system so should be a big difference for you..
Just one bit of advice .... and don't think in taking the p@ss here ..once you have built it ...Don'T mess with the bios or try to overclock ..don't fix a thing until it is broke
I learnt the hard way to LOL
