Firstly, I'm new to Project Reality, been playing it for about 3 evenings now and mainly on your servers, thats why i've joined these forums. I was lucky in that during my first game on your servers I joined a very well led and managed squad. All squad members communicated efficiently and effectively without needless chatter which really enhanced my game experience, my immersion and our effectiveness as a squad. However, during this first stint I didn't have any voice comms so last night I downloaded and setup teamspeak client.

The installation went well but it was painfull to use. I had to ALT-TAB to the teamspeak client to change comms channel every map change, about 50% of the time the change didn't work and I could still hear and talk to my old squad members (from the previous map).

I also noticed that sometimes the squad could hear me and sometimes they couldn't.

Now i'm no master at these things but i have a decent level of IT knowledge. I tried downloading TeamSpeak Overlay but that just killed my FPS. So my question is, does anyone have any decent VOIP tips ? I'd really like to establish fluid and effective comms and am wondering if there's a way for channel change to occur automatically, i.e. based on the squad you join and the nation your fighting for ?

This may sound like a newb question but what's a newb :-)

not sure what your problem is - if you are in the T&T teamspeak "room" then normally we dont change channels per map.

some people map their "speak on voip" key ie default B to also be the key in TS which activates your mic. The downside of this is that everyone on TS hears what you are saying to your squad. Personally I have the TS mic button as C.

I have 2 screens, so dont use TS overlay so cant help you on that one I'm afraid !

Thanks for the quick response. My goal is that I can only speak to and hear my squad members and squad leader. You say that the default "push to talk" key is 'B' which menas everyone can hear what i'm saying (not good). You also say that you've switched yours to 'C' so that only your squad hear you. If i've understood you correctly does that means the 'chat to squad', 'chat to team' and 'chat to all' functions in BF2 can be replicated in teamspeak ?

In the same vein, is yoru experience with teamspeak "acceptable" in that it does what you want and the quality of comms is sufficient ? If you answer yes to this then it means its simply a config/newb problem on my side and i'll make the effort to work through it.

Yeah welcome for our forums.

You said on your first stint you had no voice comms. Why is that? Wasn't VOIP working for you? That's the primary thing you need to get sorted as most in-squad comms is using VOIP.

We use Teamspeak in addition to VOIP. That's mostly used for taking the piss out of each other and having a laugh, or accidentally relaying tactical information to the enemy. If there are several people on TS on the same side, and squad leading, then TS is excellent for inter-squad comms (making sure that anyone on the enemy side is in another channel of course!).

Anyway -hope to see you on our server, and TS, soon.

sorry I obviously confused you !!!

The default key in BF2/PR to activate your mic is B. Not sure what the default key in TS is.

If you havent already, go into options in BF2 and check that there is an X in the VOIP enabled box, then do a mic test.

Enter a server and join a squad and test your mic out "hello - can anyone hear me !?!) assuming this works then you will be able to talk to your squad leader and other squad members in game - you do not talk to everyone, only your squad. If you are squad leader then you are also able to talk to the commander by using default key V.

As Epoch says, we also use TS (teamspeak) as an additional comms tool, but its more for fun and chatting rather than for tactical use in game (unless we have a number of squads up).

It can get slightly confusing when running TS as well as VOIP in game when everyone starts talking at once, you can mute the TS channel though with the menus at the top of TS if all the laughter etc gets too much !

I suggest getting your mic working over VOIP in game first, and then worrying about TS later - you can always join a T&T squad in game and we can talk to you about the TS stuff - its easier to explain than write on a forum !

we were all newbies once upon a time you know !

Hi mate... just to clarify a couple of things..

TeamSpeak is useful but by no means required for good comms.

The in-game voip system is used by default.. and is essential.

Firstly make sure you have voip enabled in the sound options in BF2.. and the mic boost option.

Then when in-game to talk to your squad only you use the 'b' button. If you are a squad leader you will also be able to talk to the commander using the 'v' button.

This is standard and you should not need anything else.

If you want to use TS as well thats fine, but its not needed. With TS when you talk, everyone in your channel will hear you. And you should find a seperate key for TS.. some examples have been given above.. i use 'shift' for TS comms.

Personally i suggest you get the in-game voip working correctly first... i use TS often to say helllo and goodbye and use voip for all other comms.

(there is a known bug that sometimes turns peoples voip off in game.. and only restarting bf2/pr will bring it back)

CLING!!!

Thats the sound of a penny dropping :)

I wrongly thought I HAD to have teamspeak enabled in order to use BF2-PR VOIP, hence my confusion. Thankyou for clearing that little brain fart up for me, i'll drop Teamspeak for now and just concentrate on getting VOIP up and running then take it from there.

Thanks again.
