ok i've currently got nvidia geforce3 64mb :(

Looking at spending no more than £100 on a new one.
Been on ebay and seen this:
ATI RADEON 9600SE 128MB with TV-OUT and DVI AGP 8X supported

I have 2 questions,
10 Is this card any good (thinkin doom3 here)
my mobo is only agp 4x, so will this work?

any input useful!

You could go for the cheaper option and buy a Geforce FX 256 for about £100

I recently (like within the last week) upgraded from a GF3. To a 9800 Pro 128MB. The Doom 3 demo plays like rubbish on the automatic settings (Medium 640x480, no Aniso or AA) dipping to <20fps at times, even with no action. I might try the low setting. The 1.67GHz Athlon (up from 1.4GHz recently also) might be the problem. Or it may be the 4.9 drivers :/

Are you sure it's an SE version you have FaNatiC? A 9600SE is the lowest of the 9600 range (which is lower again than the 9800 range). See the ATI 9600 compaison page (http://www.ati.com/products/radeon9600/radeon9600pro/compare.html) for the technical specs.

I was forced to upgrage due the GF3 acting up, but it might be better to wait for maybe an nVidia 6600/6200 or ATI X700/X600/X300.

See the graphics section of The Inquirer (http://www.theinquirer.net) for news on up and coming cards.

Some of these cards might be PCI-E only, or OEM only and who knows when they'll be out, and where :\ Before Christmas I'd imagine, but... And how they'll perform against the 9800's and the like is another question, rather well I'd suspect for newer games.

Search the web for benchmarks. For example, this site and its grafikkarten (http://www.computerbase.de/artikel/hardware/grafikkarten/2004/atis_radeon_x700-serie/10/).

I downloaded and registered Steam, so what is it and what does it do?

just get a X800 pro

Easier said than done with limited funds. He did say:
Looking at spending no more than £100 on a new one.

Which is about €145.

I've seen a 9800 SE 128MB for £91 inc. VAT on www.ebuyer.com. That's 9800 mind, not a 9600. I don't know what ebuyer are like to deal with though.

Probably even better would be a 9600XT for £90.99 inc VAT on dabs.com

ebuyer are very good to deal with. Have used them a few times myself. Bought my Chieftec Matrix server case from them for a grand spanking £35 WITH special delivery post :).

I recommend them.

It's my processor...not my videocard. Ur running at a 3 fecking ghz me only 1.5.
If I get a normal processor ( and mobo ) which I may be getting soon I wont be lagging at all either. Never lagged on FarCry either btw :D

You don't need a stupidly expensive mega graphics card, justa nice AGP x8, 256 jobby.

On my measley GForce FX 5600, 128mb agp 8 card i could run Doom 3 comfortably, (until shitloads of mobs showed up), Far Cry on mega fishy settings, and anything else on a reasonable setting.
The bigger and better your card, the more powerful your other stuff will need to be to appreciate the power.
