Firstly there's the amount of monitoring on peoples internet connections that would need doing to achieve such a legislation.

Secondly theres the fact that the only "victims" here are companies trying to brand and sell manfactured music for mere means of earning a profit from XX% of "Fans".

THIRDLY there's the obvious shift in trends towards music that we've seen in recent years clearly shown in this years Brit awards aswell.
The very sound of music is changing and artists flourishing that are so vastly different e.g. Rihanna, Arctic Monkeys and Amy Winehouse to name a few very Largely due to music downloading.

Music is a culture it is NOT a fecking job or a product to sell and for the first time in history it is being marketed and sold as such.

Real music is supported by fans who go to concerts (Just spent £155 on download) and who will buy the merchandise and so on but first the music must EARN the respect of those fans

We lived* in a world where rather than earning anything production labels would mould market and through advertising and sales figures support and "create stars" making hits more about album sales rather than actual quality of music.

I'll buy the albums if the band is GOOD because I'll be wanting poster things, lyric sheets, shiney disc stuffs, Groovey looking album cover and just general memorabilia to show I support this group/artist/whatever.

This coming after Pandora being shut down is really starting to get on my nerves with the government trying to tell what I can and can't listen to what I can/Can't say and so on.

The Internet is slowly but surely being squashed into another form of crowd control by means of the government slowly croaching in on the free exchange of anything and it's really pissing me off.

I'm just looking for a reason to throw my broadband in the bin and take a break for a bit, This would be it and I hope many others would agree.

The broadband speeds in briton are a joke as is (average under 2mbps) along with appauling support and careless infrastructure investment and now they would like to cut a deal to screw us over even more, Wonderful

Another problem would be ITUNES (BURN IN FECKING HELL) based on that whilest downloading is finding its feet the same trends of branded music can be seen to emerge.
This trend being that as soon as one artist makes money, dozens of other ones with a similar sound pop into the limelight to attempt to fish the new waters for some cash

people who would throw the "starving artists" arguement my way don't take into consideration who the heads of these production companies are and obviously don't observe the fact that more money for EMI, and all the rest is less money for the real musicians

/Rant ends

P.S. This isn't a "waaah I want free stuffs!" rave this is me being very glad that the number of musical dickheads was being greatly reduced by free listening and now it's all going back down the pan and it's royally pissing me off.

The country is wondering why the rates of bad things in general are climbing, The people are a bit pissed at being over controlled and Economically enslaved to fund Countries that don't even know who they are anymore and are losing all cultural identity because of.... GAAAAAAAAAARGGGH!!!!!!!!!!! Just FEG OFF LABOUR PARTY!

Fegging Capitalism is doing nothing but protecting the investment into utter bullshit service/product. Not doing that with the music I listen to.

I'm of course not referring to software piracy at all here.
Open Source is really starting to compete with capitalist shite so in most cases free stuff is better because there's more passion and interest involved in its creation (Hence why PR rules!) but I'll still pay you for all the R&D and hard work that's gone into the creation of the engine.

BAH!:goat: Stopping this rant now I've lost my way. I'm pissed at being ripped off and first Peep I hear from BT I'm not giving them any more of my money, I'd expect anyone with any independance to do the same

Sick of being a sheep it is time for the rise of the goat :goat::goat::goat::goat::goat::goat::goat::goat::g oat:

FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.P.S Computer technology in itself began from the free exchange of information http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=J1fAVteD_zU I highly recommend watching ALL the series of those videos

I hate my brain... No matter how many paragraphs I can't explain what I'm trying to get across (I wish I could borrow Masaq or Madtommy's posting skills if only for a moment! :P)... I've paid fuck loads of money before for Norton + Mcaffe and been forced into internet Explorer and yet My best browsing experiance comes with Comodo + AVG and Firefox all free and far more superior than any of their rip off counterparts.

Give us the Hippy days back

One BIG thing to remember is.. goverments esp. this present labour one, say a lot of bollocks they will never do or be able to do...its just rhetoric. I'd place this in that field... and even if they do attempt it.. it is doomed to fail.

FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOM for Cain!!!!

TBH I say +1

How often can you get some awesome remixs of some of your favorite songs ?
Unless you want to tour the country/world looking for a CD with it on, then be my guest !

And music CD's are stupidly priced (granted, i can go into asda and pick up a single for £1.99 ...)

So i have a general +1 post here.

And lets not get to political, k ?

EDIT: CAINS THREADS ARE FTW !

I'll subscribe to an artists website and give them donations monthly if it means I get access to DL all their music.

I will strive to support this server though I don't have to in order to enjoy it and as soon as I *hopefully get this job I'm donating money to all of my favorite open source projects (e.g. Firefox, Open Office, Comodo, AVG, ) and many others... PR!!!

Why? because they make them because they want to make a good program and give it to me for free so that I can go through life on my PC a lil bit easier/happier/safer, they don't force me to pay them anything and I have a SUPREME Respect for that fact and I WANT to support them in what they're doing and doing well

This isn't Piracy WE are going to talk about here obviously, It's merely being reasonable and creating good honest product Which I don't think this sort of restriction is encouraging of.

I saw 50Cent dissappear around the same time DLing became big and for the FIRST time ever I can actually listen to the radio over my MP3 player and not fear for my ears to start bleeding or my brain to become numb.

This isn't about freedom of speech this is about freedom of thought...

a'Thankyou  :D

LOL - I'm gonna sound real old here but I can remember when the only free music you got was taping the top 40 on the radio!

On topic though, if anyone believes the internet is a free spirit not shackled by surveillance etc - u got a shock coming!

Thing is, this sort of thing is against everything the internet used to stand for - nowadays not so sure!

All the ISP's have to do is 'shape' the traffic to avoid torrents etc - easy enough done by blocking ports etc - and yah, there will always be someone with a workaround but the intention is to stop the majority - not the geeky script kiddies/hackers/watever.

I remember reading that just a few high profile prosecutions in the US brought about a noticeable drop in music/software downloads.

I'm with you Cain in spirit but the writing is on the wall!
