Well i thought i'd share my scary night with you...

6.30 last night i was working at my desk, which is in my attic, when i heard what i thought was the neighbours doing some DIY.

After about 2 mintes of tapping/banging i decided it sounded a bit different than expected...by the time i got to the botom of the stairs i knew something was amiss...i had to go into my front room knowing either someone was in there or was trying hard to get in.. i turned the corner to be confronted by a man weilding a 10" screw driver half through my front window... i'm not sure who was more freaked out! He took one look at me and and pilled out the window and sprinted off... i wasn't sure whether to hid under the bed or give chase. So i did neither!

The fecker destroyed one of my sash windows and freaked my wife out good and proper, bloody git. Oh the joys of living in the city...

Anyway I thought i'd share last nights fun & games with ya.

Bloody hell Tommy. Did you call the police? If you do then you should be able to claim the damage on house insurance and get away with it if you have an incident number i believe.

yeah i called the old bill alright.. they took me on a quick tour to see if i could spot the bastard.. no joy of course.

I had a CSI team around with their fluffy things and tape and stuff.. looking for evidence, which was quite amusing.....but of course he was wearing gloves.

Another 15 seconds and he would of been in my front room with me!.. not a very nice situtaion to be in!

I can imagine matey. Had a similar situation many years ago when 3 guys burst through the front door looking for someone who had been sat on my wall and burst through 20 seconds before.

Admittedly it was a squat but i left them to it and pointed to the back door.

We were burgled at 5am on April Fool's day, last year = / I was upstairs talking with my bro whilst some guy had come in through our garage, turned on all the downstairs lights and left my door and window open (Wonder how relieved he was to see my downstairs bedroom was empty at the time) and pretty much took my mum's laptop, my wallet and a mobile.

Stupid prick was caught the next day when "a suspicious character had been spotted going door-to-door trying to sell a laptop in the local area" - Shame the cops made a deal with him though for more valuable info. We claimed on the insurance, and I got some piece of shit mobile, and my mum got Vista - Better off without it xD

It's just not worth risking the chase unless the odds are really in your favour. e.g size, weapons, environment etc

Glad you and the mrs are okay mate!

Yeah, glad you're both safe.

Here's a tip:

Join a local neighbourhood watch programme, if there is one. Seriously, it's like the #1 thing that lowers your chances of being burgalled. I forget the exact statistic but when doing a forensics/toxicology section of my Chemistry degree, a lecturer quoted some study that stated it lowered your chances of getting broken into in an urban area by some massive figure; reduced it to 35 times below the average I *think*.

Given that there is a neighbourhood watch programme on my street, I promptly nicked a window sticker from my gran's house next time I visited her (it's ok, we were helping her move out and her new place wasn't in a scheme :p) and slung it in my back window. Voilá, free protection.

MadTommy
31-01-08, 15:00
hehe yeah we are members of the neighbourhood watch.. if for nothing else, the regular news letter always gives us a laugh!

But the balls of this bloke at 6.10pm, with people coming and going, i don't reckon a sticker would of put him off.. anyway it was stuck to the other window.. maybe i need to move it! :D

Masaq

Course, statistics and window stickers don't do a jot when some plonker badly needs a DVD player to pay for his next fix.

My area's not too bad, but there's a street that runs behind the uni which links a pretty decent suburb with one of Hull's largest council housing estates. Police advise students on a regular basis not to park on it or move into a house on it; the sheer number of daylight burglaries and car break ins is something to behold - most of it drugs-related, and the stuff nicked turning up in known dealer's houses a few days later.

I was round my mates house when some guy decided to put a large sledge hammer through the window ...

But because his mom was at work, there was no car on the drive, and me and my mate were upstairs playing on the PS3.

So, we hear this almighty crash, run downstairs to see a rather stock bloke TRYING to get through this window.

My mates dad saw this, and grabbed his bolt action rifle :p

Few shots in the air, and this bloke was off !

My mates sister was rigid with shock & I couldn't beleive what had just happened.

Anyway, hope you're ok, and that the bastard gets what he deserves !

As long as you use reasonable force you are okay. e.g if he is coming at you its within your right to defend yourself. Bludgeoning an umarmed intruder to death may be a bit excessive :D

Tony Martin being a brilliant case in point.

Shooting a teenager in the back with a shotgun when they're already out of the house and halfway down the path after you've already shot his mate = excessive force.

And actually, there's an interesting aspect to the law.

If you prepare for an attack (i.e.: by placing traps on your property, having a baseball bat with nails driven through the end handy in every room etc) then you're breaking the law.

However, if you can demonstrate that the weapon you hurt/killed them with just happened to be handy and you didn't realise you were brandishing it then you're likely to be fine.

So, don't keep a sword under your pillow, because reasonable people don't keep swords under their pillow. Instead, keep the sword on a display stand next to all your fencing awards. If you have a baseball bat next to your bed, keep a baseball glove and a baseball there too.

I have a rather nice ice axe handy (I live in a ground-floor flat, alone. My girlfriend's ex (who has done time for stalking her and at the end of her relationship, attempted to kill her twice) lives about 300m down the road from me. When we first started dating, it got a little hairy - figures lurking outside my living-room window and such). I keep it with the rest of my climbing kit; in the hallway, handy for both ends of the flat.

For I'm returning from night shifts and for long journeys by car late at night (like when travelling to see my family in Norfolk) I have a 6 D-cell maglite in the boot, along with a first aid kit, my webbing belt and hi-vis jacket used when providing first aid cover lol.

This is also why there's such a good defence if you bottle somebody in a bar. You basically claim (with supporting statements from your friends) that you forgot you had the bottle in your hand when you swung at the other guy. You're still causing bodily harm, but you remove the added time for doing it with a weapon, with intent.

I'd like to add that I'm a very non-violent person, and I've never swung at some random bloke in a pub, and certainly not with a bottle in my hand :p

I was brought up on a farm in Ireland... my Dad always had a handful of 12 gauge shells by the bed.. he had taken the lead out of them and replaced it with rock salt... very very painful but unlikely to do any permanent damage.. nasty, but nice idea.. but somehow i don't think the Bristol cops would see it the way the Irish country Garda (police) see these things. Could be deemed excessive force :D , shame.

commando-101

Unfortunately you can also be reckless as to whether an assault has occured- that means you may not have meant it but were your actions reckless? i.e bottling someone etc.

Any time you are using more force than the other guy (arming yourself etc) you are at risk from prosecution - however the law is subjective - it takes into account whether a defendant was so in fear that HE believed his actions were reasonable.

Good example would be defending your family.

tbh, only severe cases make it to court - 9/10 people causing injury to burgulars are treated as they should be - victims.

Best advice is to always avoid confrontation - insurance will pay for your plasma etc.

sure my granda in the 60s/70s always had a shotgun loaded when someone knocked on the door

Well unlike Rico and Commando, I've never been a cop - but I've worked very closely with a fair few, so I've picked some stuff up that way.

Also did a year of a Chemistry degree course; two modules were on toxicology and forensic science, which was pretty interesting.

Finally, we get a fairly good grounding in relevant bits of law (mostly to do with the Mental Health Act and Capacity legislation) on my nursing course; and any MH nurse with any sense at all reads up on the laws around assault and bodily harm due to the times when we can find ourselves holding patients down or the targets of assaultative behaviour. Rare, but not as rare as they should be :(
