Dunno if any of you are BSG fans. Not a great lover of the original series, but the new series are outstanding.

Anyways, I was checking out the ModDB top mods (PR came second overall for released mods, again), and noticed "Beyond the Red Line" in the Indie Games category...

Website is here: http://www.game-warden.com/bsg/

It uses Freespace 2, and it's a Total Conversion mod using the FS2 Open engine; so it's a completely free download.

At the minute it's in demo stages. I immediately downloaded and installed, and I've done nothing but play it for the last two hours.

It's amazing, a *really* good game. Actually, scratch that. It's stunning.

Controls are really intuitive (especially to anyone who ever played the Star Wars: X-Wing series (TIE Fighter remains my favourite PC game, ever. I still play it completely through at least once a year)), and the way the Vipers handle is excellent. Combat feels like you're in the damn series, it's hectic, full of turns and crazy manouvers, and the cylon raiders move in the same way they do on-screen - long, fast run-ins with everything blazing at you, then pulling away. Vipers are agile, twisty beasts.

Unfortunately FS2 doesn't have newtonian physics built in, but they've done a pretty good job of implementing a "glide mode" activated by key-press, that allows you to rotate your ship without chaging your velocity and vector; so it's entirely possible to pull the very neat trick of flying along a path, rotate your ship 180 degrees while continuing to fly in the same direction you were going, and then fire your cannons at a persuing craft. (As soon as you deactivate glide mode you start accelerating in the new heading though.)

Unfortunately you don't get a cockpit, but you do get a very nice HUD.

The game screen is very swish, and the briefings and debriefings in the Demo campaign are excellent. I mean, excellent. They're voice-acted by someone who sounds very much like Starbuck ( <3 ) and they're responsive to the mission events. If you loose one pilot, you hear about. Two, and the debriefing alters.

In-game, your wingmates will chatter and gossip about events from the series - including small spoilers if you haven't watched beyond series 2, lol. They bitch and argue at each other, and it's frakking funny.

I haven't tried multiplayer yet; I will do shortly. I'm not sure it'll be as immersive without the radio chatter and such, but it's looking like it could be very very fun indeed.

To be honest, even if you're not a BSG fan it's probably a very good game. If you [i]are[i] a BSG fan, download it immediately. It's a quality mod, and one that I now can't wait to see fully released.

Lol, those Viper cockpits look pretty cramped. Not sure you could do the naughty in one without having a few limbs sliced off.

Mind you, for Starbuck I'd happily discard an arm.

I may not be on PR or LOMAC until I've finished the Demo campaign, I'm afraid... and as it comes with a mission editor even in the Demo, I may not actually leave the house for several weeks now lol.

It's hella fun. "Very Easy" mode was ridiculously easy, completed the first mission without getting a single hit on my ship. Not even sure they fired at me, tbh.

Played it through again on Easy, lost my wingman and got beat up fairly badly, took about 40% damage. Don't think I'll be trying Hard for a little while lol.

Links to download:

Installer:
Filefront

ModDB

And you also need the latest version of the Automatic Game Updater:

http://www.game-warden.com/bsg/downloads_public/updater/BtRLDemoUpdater.zip

Just extract the Java file to the Demo directory, and run it. It automatically patches everything to the latest version.

------------

To run the game for the first time:

Run: "Beyond the Red Line", which is a Freespace launcher.

Ensure the address bar at the top points at "\BtRL\Demo\fs2_open_3_6_9.exe", press Apply

Alter any video and audio settings to your preferences, calibrate joystick etc from the various tabs, and press Apply.

Then select RUN from the bottom of the application.

Once you've done that, in future you can run the game from "fs2_open_3_6_9.exe" (or a shortcut to it). All settings etc can be altered from within the game.

I think Gunny has a new nickname :p

I'm going to have a little play with multiplayer in a few.

Looks like you need to open port 7808 only.

If you want to play with your stats tracked, you need to register a profile at http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/

Ok so now I've really watched the video :P WOW that looks dam cool!!!

Have ye watched BSG? :p The heavy weaponry on the Basestars and Battlestars does that; I'm assuming it's got a similar purpose to AAA, the rounds being designed to explode after a certain time or at a set altitude, and when fired in sufficient numbers you filled sections of the sky with shrapnel.

I'm guessing that as they've got the settings turned to default levels and as most of those shots are rendered quite a way out, we're just not seeing the rounds themselves. On some of the closer shots, you actually see the streaks of tracer fire ending in those small explosions.

They do look a little same-y I gotta say, but I guess that firing solutions for the batteries would be set in fixed patterns resulting in similar spreads of rounds.

The capital ships aren't in the demo unfortunately - only Vipers Mk2 and 7, the Raiders and the large mining ship (I forget the name).

It's a very slow development process they're using - they've been on this thing for about two-three years now, and that demo was released in March '07 (God, I've been so slooooow here!). Here's hoping they're getting close to release... :)

Edit: oh man, I just read on their forums that the BSG's flight pods will actually retract and extend.... *blissful sigh*.

Oooh, it's good. Remember the Season 2 episode "Scar"? Well, there's a very tough Raider zipping around in the asteroid field you're mining...
